Snow, I would love to see pics of your setup and anyone that has pics of big freshwater filteration setups it would be very helpful.. I need to learn the ways of the sump tank LoL. it will be a saltwater in a few years.

There is a Search button here... Just select DIY Filters and enter the word Sump. You should get threads with info.

I would do a canister and def a Sump. Im a big fan of Sumps :D

On my 300 (30" deep) I have a 100gl DIY Sump and a FX5

If you plan to do Salt Water, you better learn about the Freshwater Sump first ;)

3 FX5s for 6x turnover rate

or a sump

If the future for the tank is saltwater, go sump. FX5s would only become nitrate factories

Im gettin a 300 gal for my 22in red belly pacu. The tank is reef ready (as it has the hole in the glass for a sump). When the fish dieds hope not for a long time, but if it does it will be saltwater. So im lookin for a freshwater filteration set up? The fish has very big waste and thinking of needin alot of mechanical filteration. I heard that a sump in a fresh water is not what you want. I have been looking at the fluval FX5 with a aquaripure nitrate filter. Soo what do you guys think???????:)

A DIY wet/dry filter with 60-100g plastic sump from TARGET will do the trick.....SPread four Aqua Clear 300's along the back...........Add a mediyum two strong powerheads on both ends to keep the fish waste circulating.........

With good water parameters (nitrates under 20 ppm), your pacu could live 30+ years......you might never convert to salt!

If you have the funds I would get the Eheim 2262. It uses much better media. Not that you can not put it in the FX5 which is what I have done.
