I am rather low income individual and would like to build filters for my 110gallon and my 33gallon... Im haveing a really hard time understandinng the sump system. if anyone could give me a sumps for dumys kind of thing that would be awsome. or any diy filter that r good that would be sweet also. thanks

Check out above tank filters, all you need is a pump, a container that fits above the tank, some media and pipe.

^ i go to a lfs where each tank is filtered by a sponge filter and they are crystal clear and the fish look great... you can even punch holes through a bottle fill it with bio media and put a airstone in it.

I was gonna post this.
The sport of aquaria is not so much a race of dollars as a learning experience.
No doubt we can spend it like we got it, or, we can continue to educate ourselves. The underlying theories that effect this pasttime are incredibly old and unchanging.
Listen to all the theories and ideas offered and then decide what is best for you and make your own decisions.
Then I thought, Oh Heck, Just use a UGF.:)

Diy sump and diy bucket filter... Biomedia made of lava rock.

The basics of a sump is that gravity feeds it from a surface overflow in the tank. In mine, the water flows into a bucket where I normally have a bag-filter. When the bucket overflows, the bag filter needs cleaning. In my bucket, the edges are cut out so that the water flows out the backside, and is forced through more biomedia. The Lava rock should be deeper than I have it in the picture also. Then I put a divider in the middle to keep the lava rock from moving, and I put a cubic foot of open-cell filter foam held down by tile. This wqay, if the foam becomes restricted, the water flows over the tile. then, after the foam, the pump sits in the end to return water to the tank.

For the bucket...it's just full of Lava-rock. Then I used a flowerpot with 8 holes areound the edge to disperse the water, and also to hold foam and filter fiber. Same as the bucket in the sump...when the flowerpot overflows, it needs to be cleaned.

Ive considered used not really sure bout that. Lots of good Ideas I dont understnad the above filter ver well it some one could send me some detailed pics and instructions I might. I was thinking of setting up a gravity feed haveing teh water go through 3 sealed 5gallon pails with meadi then a pump at the end to put it back up into the take... hows this sound?
