Sump, its easier to maintain in the long run.

I'd go with a sump and an FX5 to polish the water.

id go with sump, less maintenance then canister filters. maybe try a canister pond filter lol i was thinking of getting a aquatop 2500gph with uv filter to try on a fish tank

Yea i was thinking about trying one of those canisters out too. I wonder why it took so long for a company to put a UV light in their canisters.

I have two Fx5's and a 30gal heavily planted sump, to filter my 180gal. Like everyone says...just depends on how heavily you stock it. Id start with a large sump...55gal...and one Fx5. That way if you need more filtration you can add Fx5's (which are easy to set up and a sump is not easy to set up). I say always over filter because, when you run across a supper rare fish a LFS, you want to know your tank can support an unplanned rad fish.

Those uv canisters are made cheap, and the uv size vs flow rate makes the uv usless, I got one with a bunch of used stuff I picked up and im throwing it in the garbage. If you use uv you need the right size bulb and flowrate to be effective in any way.

I would go with a sump for Bio filtration and a DE for mechanical if your goal is the clearest possible water. I have never found anything that remotely comes close to this combination for water quality and ease of maintenance. At $210 for the DE (see my signature) I think the Hayward EC40 pool filter is the aquarium filter deal of the century! The DE media is very cheap and the maintenance has been pretty much nothing for the 6+ months I have had mine (Pump the handle once every week or every two weeks.)
