Filtering a Store

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
SORRY, I got carried away. What I meant to type was if you have 20 fish per tank, that's 3000 fish, not 10,000. In my own defence though, if you've got 150 tanks and most have only 20 fish your store is going to look awfully empty unless you've got a lot of big fish.

Okay. So how many fish do you have in the tanks? Just guess. Walk around and look. Over a period of time it's not unusual to find 3 or more species in most tanks. I just don't normally mix new arrivals.

As for the new stuff-old stuff thing... I just moved the fish in the tanks that were almost empty into other almost empty tanks. If I was getting 10 boxes of 1/2 bags I needed 20 empty tanks. If you've got a store with 100 tanks or more it's not that hard to come up with empties. The example you gave was 150, that should be even easier.

If there's 250 swords in a box and you put a box in a 29g by the time you've stocked a store there's quite a few fish there. By the time you've only got 20 fish in a tank... YOU NEED TO BUY MORE FISH.

Let's put together a small order, say 12 boxes.

I need 3 kinds of swords: Red Velvet, Red velvet Wags, and Marigolds
3 kinds of platies: Red Mickey Mouse (crescents) Red Wags, and Sunburst Wags
3 kinds of mollies: Black, Black Lyretail, Silver Sailfins
4 kinds of angels: Small assorted veils, med assorted veils, Breeder veils, and a fancy mix
I need 3 sizes of plecos: Something I can sell for 3.99, 5.99, 8.99
I need a couple of kinds of corys. Lets make it 3- albino, spotted, and green
oops... I've already ordered 13 1/2 boxes and I haven't ordered gouramis, cichlids or taken advantage of any specials. I've got close to 2100 fish on this order and I need 19 tanks at least. 10-12K isn't a lot for a store to have in stock at any given time. And we haven't done any pool fish or saltwater, just some of the basics.

This should give you an idea this is my mates shop “Woodford Aquatics” this is a typical bank of tank he as about 11 banks like this. They have an over flow that drops into the sump and can be switched of independently.

we arent allowed to move fish around on the wall, notice how the same species are always in the same tank

Okay, you just work there. I thought we were discussing tanks and not divided cubicles within a tank. 50 tanks divided into 150 partitions is completely different than 150 tanks.

Do you visit other retail stores? not just fish or pet stores? Walmart, Target, Kroger's? Have you ever noticed that they're constantly moving end-caps and displays on the main "action alley?" Placing slow moving items in another spot sometimes results in immediate sales without adjusting price points.

I got sucked into the thread because I thought we were going to discuss the rationale for filtration systems within a store. Hopefully someone got something from this.

Im curious if anyone has ever owned a store, worked, or been a customer of a store that had Filter media with beneficial bacteria already on the filter or bio media specificlly for the purpose to give or sell to there customers so that fish are not put into a uncycled tank? reading this thread and thinking about bacteria made it pop into my head since im trying to instantly cycle my new tank.

I would have to say that 50% of endcaps are overstock and 50% are POGs, usually showing new stuff.

Not when it is changed everyday. Not enough time for anything to grow.

True but what about ones that have sumps

Prefilter is either changed everday, backwashed, or changed according to manufacturer instructions/visits. Large systems are pretty complicated.

Yes my friend does this he has mesh bags with ceramics in them in the sump he uses them for him self when setting up a new tank in the shop or for a customer when he uses one he simple puts a date on a new bag and throws it in the sump.
