Filtering fish rooms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally wouldnt get a corallife type pump just cause there a bit weak for a whole fish tank room but a blower would be perfect. They can run a 2-3 40 gallons but their output is very very limited and there loud! A blower and be placed outside and have a little diy shed over it and with a little expanding foam where the pcv enters the house no noise what so ever from the blower.

Setting up a pvc tube around the tanks and then having some brass T's to control the air flow and your golden.

These are the sponge filters i use and there great.

20 for 45 bucks comes out to around $2.24 each which is well worth it. Never lost fry due to them.

Finished product will look somthing like this

The pvc will hold the air pressure but the brass T's are needed as the closest ones to the pump would need to be restricted the most and the farthest would be the lest restricted.

Buy a good air pump or two, build an air distribution system and run air-driven sponges and boxes to each tank.

That's how I filter most of the tanks in my 50-60 tank fishroom: 1 box (with lots of air, fluff changed frequently) and 1 sponge (with less air).

Get a linear piston pump from Jehmco. They are efficient and super quiet.

Linear pumps aren't worth the extraordinary up front cost IMO. They are no more efficient than a good diaphragm pump and cost huge money if they ever need rebuilt. Do your research before you make a decision. As an example a Pondmaster AP100 costs about $30 for a kit yet is at least $100 less than any comparable linear pump. You should get at least 2 years before you need to rebuild a diaphragm pump. That means at least 6 years of operation to catch up to cost of linear pump cost. I have no idea how long a linear pump lasts before rebuild is required. I am sure it is over 6 years though.

Dogofwar what is this box you speak of? Or anyone who knows what he's talking about, can it be diy? I'm looking at a lot of diy stuff as my wife is cheap and hates fish so me spending loads of money on a fish room would make the couch my bed for a cpl weeks lol

this....... the "box" is usually a clear plastic box with 2-3 chambers and an outlet tube ...you can probably see one if you search" internal aquarium filter box "on amazon....another thing you may want to consider.... Aqua clear 70's cost literally PENNIES A MONTH to run ,so if you can make a deal on buying bulk from lfs , and you can afford the up front cost they will work fine on a 40 g tank , as long as you don't REALLY overstock.....

I use these: http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-supplies/aquarium-filters/lees-economy-filter.html

Hard to DIY for less than $2.55 each!

I've found them to be extremely effective mechanical filters and aerators. I keep about a handful of gravel and pillow stuffing (I get from Michaels craft store with weekly coupon) in them. And change the stuffing pretty frequently. Much easier than cleaning a sponge filter.

So with the boxes and sponges you get mechanical and biological filtration? Or just mechanical? You guys rock I'm about to start searching for 40 and 20 gallon tanks this started out as a pipe dream but may become very real within months
