I just went from a 75g to a 125g, I am presently running the 2 Ac110's that were on my 75, I want to spend as little as possible. I was thinking about adding one more AC110, it is a cichlid tank , I plan on having up to 10 medium sized fish. I know a guy that has 2 XP3's for $150 used, or I can pic up a new AC 110 for $60.

Would the 3 AC110's cut it? if not I will likley just get the pair of XP3's, and continue running both my AC's for now.

I think an XP3 would be the way to go. Use an XP3 for mainly bio, and the two AC110s mainly for mechanical. That would be great filtration for a 125.

canister filters are great; quiet, more powerful, more efficient (IME)

2 ac110 and 2 xp3 over 3 ac110's
whats the stocklist anyways?

I've had 2 Emperor 400s running on my 125 for about 5 years now and I've never had issues with ammonia or nitrites. I bought the Emp400s because its what my LFS had back then.

After browsing this site for a few months it seems Aquaclears are the preferred HOB filter. If I could change out my 2 Emp400s for 2 AC110s I would.

Recently I've been thinking about adding another HOB just to make sure I have enough bio-filtration (and to help with mechanicle) as my fish grow. Right now I'm leaning toward an AC70 or the smaller version of the Emp400 (Emp280? I forget what its called). The 3rd filter I'm looking to get will be in the middle of the 6ft tank, and theres no walking space behind the tank, so I figure it'll be a pain in the ___ to remove a larger-sized (AC110 or Emp400) from the back for maintenance/etc.

Back on point though...I think 2 AC110s will be plenty for a 125, so long as the tank isn't overstocked.

I say get one XP3 & use the 2 AC110's. That would allow you to mess with different media combinations. Somebody also makes a Biowheel attachment that connects to any canister output. Thats a pretty cool idea...

BPags52- Get an AC70, put a sponge over the intake & fill it with BioMax. Trust me. The penguin doesnt have as much capacity & you already have 2 biowheels.

Yeah I was leaning more toward the AC70, because its easier to load up with bio media than trying to cram it in the media trays of the Emperors. I already have a liter of Eheim Substrate biomedia, and media bags. I'll just be using the sponge with that biomedia on top.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack thread :D

an easy way to add more bio to a tank is sponge filtration. its very cheap and some people like to have airstones anyway...... why not have double benefit?

2 ac 110 and a XP3 is ideal. You could even add a powerhead in there for even better water flow.
