is it ok to filter tanks with only sponge filters?

Yes, for smaller tanks (I run only sponge filters on all my shrimp tanks). For bigger fish, a sponge filter provides little to no mechanical filtration so it's best as a support system for a sump or canister setup.

I agree great for small tanks

Actually, you just have to up the sponge filter size...

They are entirely capable of running tanks by themselves, but if that's the only thing you're running you'll want to clean them more often to keep them performing mechanical filtration as best they can.

I Love your avatar ..... sponge what .....

Lol me too...ya my sponges in the tank are more then enough for the size.

Thanks guys my HOB filter got messed up by the sand

I run my grow out tanks with sponges only. I do find plecs too messy to keep in sponge only tanks as the poo builds up incredibly fast. I throw a HOB on to help with the plecs.

Plecos will chew on the sponges as my large L-600 USE TO. Sponges will work except for larger fish a hob or cannister will be needed depending on how much wasste the fish produces. MLFS keeps 90 gallon tank with two sponges on a hap tank with good results.

I think you'd be shocked at some of the tanks I've seen run with sponges. And what about a mattenfilter mod?
