Filters for gars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any filters will work for them depending on the tank size. How big are you talking baby gar??

Then yeah any filtration will work. It just depends on the tank size before any of us can give you suggestions on the correct filter. What size tank are you putting the gar in?

I am thinking of doing an arrowanna and gar setup but in a pond when they are fullgrown. Do gars jump as much out of the water like the arrows do i would hate to come home to dead fish that jumped out.

The gar will need a decent-sized aquarium or pond in a very short period of time, so be prepared to provide it with a larger home. You may want to read The Gar Captive Care Guide and Gars & Tank Sizes for species-specific help on the subject.

Mixing gars with arowanas is usually recommended against, especially if you intend to mix them with silver arowana or either of the two Australian arowanas (jardini and leichardti). However, some people have had success with mixing the two types of fish, so that combination is not completely out of the question.

Gars do jump on occasion and usually do so out of fright. The frequency of the jumping varies from species to species and even from gar to gar. The addition of an arowana can increase the chance that the gar will get spooked.

Wiggles has some very good advice here. Another thing that will influence tankmate suitability is what gar your planning on getting.

Will add on more later, but to answer the OP's initial question, I will concur with what other members have said up to this point. The type of filter is not as important as what gets the job done. in which case, is a question more suited to the filteration sub-forum.

I've personally run sumps and canisters, in both cases, they work relatively well.

Agree with wiggles on the arowana and tank upgrades.

Another important point already brought up, what sp or gar are you intend on keeping?
