The disorder part I know for sure that I do. But the smelling filters is something else entirely.

Me, too! The apartment smells like that of a lake or river something. I do not use commercial fish food so mine does not smell like that at all. You can small it right before you enter the apartment.

in my opinion a good smell is a sign of a healthy tank, ..if it smells fishy or like fish poo something is not working properly..a large water change and a cleaning of the filters are in order.

just a good base line i go off of...but i have had a good smelling tank, and have the readings be out of wack from my test kit...but If i test a tank when it smells off the test always shows something is wrong.

I kinda know what the OP is talking about, since i tend to smell my water before a water change to make sure nothing is gone bad, and that earthy smell of a healthy tank is sort of calming...
