Filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i own both a 2080 and a 2260 and i must say both work perfect for me... I must add that my tanks are smaller. The 2080 is on a 110 and the 2260 on a 150. As said before, i have filter floss in both. In the 2080 about 1/3 of the upper basket and in the 2260 about 2-3cm. I do have optimal clarity, even when cleaning the filters only once every 4-5 months. Usually i dont even clean the pre-filter in between as its not really neccesary.
I do have some other cannisters on the tank with the 2080 and also some internal filters. those pick up a lot of debris so maybe thats the key?

The German AAA conducts annual surveys of automobile brand satisfaction. Every year, Mercedes Benz ranks in the far low range. Average cars like Renault, Citroen, Mazda, rank far better.

Reason: People who purchase a high-quality luxury car want it to work perfectly. People who pay less expect less and are satisfied with what they have although their cars are not better than a Mercedes. I guess I am an unsatisfied Mercedes driver ...

Main question, and I hope you can help me here: How thick is "pretty thick? Half of the top basket? More?

See, I do not call that "only". My filters stand for 6-10 months before I clean them. It has worked well that way with the "Classic" line and with the "Pro1" line on comparatively more heavily stocked tanks. Last time I touched my Pro 3 was late July, flow is still strong.

If the Pro 3 has to be cleaned more often than the other Eheim lines, I call that a step down :( I will try it out, but it does not make me a happy Mercedes driver ...

Thanks for your input,
HarleyK

ps
I hope this helps faststang1 to decide on his original question, the origin of this thread.
I use a 3" thick, after packing it pretty tight, layer of filter floss.

The only reason for my bi monthly cleaning is due to the phosphate build up in the filter. We have insane phosphates where I am at, and with the filter running that long I am finding that it actually contributes to the phosphates going up. The build up of organic wastes is just too high. On my planted I have to do cleanings once a week. I have run my filter as long as 6 months without cleaning, but that won't cut it for my plant tank, and my fahaka seems less happy in higher phosphate amounts.

Thanks a lot, guys

Let me summarize this for faststang1's as well as my own benefit:
Seems like there are the following tricks to become a happy 2080 user:
  1. don't go bigger than 150 gal (mine is overwhelmed at 220 gal, Eheim says 300 gal))
  2. use additional filtration if needed (which I am not used to from my previous Eheims)
  3. Be extremely generous with filter floss (a design flaw that is annoying, however, cheap to take care of)
  4. Cleaning intervals should be 2-5 months, no longer (:irked:)

I'll try that.

Stiffmeister, do you use additional filters on the tank with the 2260 as well?

Thanks,
HarleyK

So from what I understand is the 2260 is hard to clean but it cleans Better....
The 2080 easy to clean but I will need another filter to help clean the 200,So will a 2028 be to small or should I put Two 2080???.

You guys have been a big help,Thanks

if you can, i would put 2x 2080. 2028 is a very nice filter too but has way less volume. if you put 2x 2080 with some filter floss in last compartment, your done imo.

On the 2260 I read that you put 5liters Ehfimech and Ehfisubstrat, then you put 5 Liter of Ehfifix. Is this true and if so all you need to do is replace Ehfifix to clean it.I'll be getting it soon.I'm trying to find out more on this filter.

I don't know how well that would go over, as my 150 only has the fahaka and some food in it. In general I don't take any filters claimed tank size capable of maintaining as truth. For the fluval 404 series I wouldn't use them on anything larger than 55 gallons. Beyond that they need help.

Howdy,

The 22xx series is the classic line of Eheim, and my 2211 has been running for 16 years now. They are the best, and I regret not getting one. I got carried away with the 2080...

The volume of the 2260 is 18 liters. I suggest 5 L EhFiMech and the rest with EhFiSubstratPro. Plan some space for filter floss on the top. You should also consider the 2262 (e.g. from Marine Depot) as it has a higher flow rate and will circulate the tank better and will thus have better mechanical filtration

You will never have to replace any media. Simply wash it out and put it back into the filter. It will last forever. The only media you need to replace is the layer of filter floss on top.
