Filtration advice on well stocked 35 gallon

Lol! Thank you very much for that information. The Fluval came fully cycled, but it was so filthy I had to give it a really good rinsing (in treated water) before I could use it, so there was likely some major bacteria lost. I've only had fish in this tank for a week and a half or so. I will do a water change as soon as I get home and do so several times a week until this is under control.

Would 30% water changes be sufficient? Or should I be doing 50% for now?

It's amazing how much I've forgotten in the few years I was without fish. I feel like a newbie all over again!
 
30% should be good...pay attention to PH though, it is also good to test PH out of your tap water...for instance, if due to new water, your PH shoots from 6.5 to 8, then your ammonia level can suddenly become deadly.
