Filtration and Stand for a 180g

Try not adding a wet dry setup if the sound of dripping water bothers you. I didn't set one up because of the noise and didn't like how it lowers the water temp. In my sump all I got are filter socks and submerged bio media

It's not the water trickling through the exposed area that was loud. It was the water rushing into the drip tray from the two drains located directly above the drip tray. In the pic you can see that a TON of water is coming out. That was what gave it the loud sound. Wouldn't the water enter the sump the exact same way?

Perhaps fewer holes in the drip tray would cause the water level of the tray to raise resulting in the water not falling as far, making it quieter?

I'm not sure what size the holes are yet. I pick the tank up tomorrow night. I'm thinking the 1500gph looks nice though. However someone on another board commented that wet dry setups do not need the 10x turnover rate that I generally go for. Is there truth behind that? The slower water flow should help with the noise.

I actually think I'm going to go in a different direction. Since it has a 2x4 stand I know the wet dry will be louder than my old one that was enclosed in a stand. I actually think I'm going to get an FX5 to run the two overflows. As the fish get larger and and the bioload increases I'll add a second FX5. Do you still use the Durso Stand Pipes or is there a better way of doing that?

I would stick with a sump...so much more versatile. You can set them up to be very quiet...it just takes some fine tuning. Sumps also give you the ability to remove heaters from your display.

But if you go with FX5s, I would plug the drains and place the FX5s intakes in each overflow (assuming you running two of them) and that way you will still reap the benefits of surface skimming.

I don't think you would want to run dursos because you would want a full siphon going into the FX5s. A durso would feed air into your FX5 and you don't want that.

I'm just terrified of a loud wet dry. I sit around 15 feet from the tank and when I watch movies I hate hearing water trickling. I did not think about plugging the intake and putting the FX5 intakes behind the overflows. That's a great idea. I actually could do the FX5 in one overflow and my Aquatop CF-500UV in the other. Eventually picking up a second FX5 to replace the Aquatop.

+1 on dual fx5, good advice with plumbing.

That way you solve your noise issue, not to mention just plug and play, great design great features if you have the cash. Just get inline heater unless you don't mind a quality sub.

id go canisters too, I love sumps much more then canisters but inside the house only use canisters, sure you can fine tune them etc but they will never be as silent as canister I used to sleep with 2x fx5s 1ft away from my face and I am the type of person who cant sleep with any sound, I find it hard to sleep when it rains out side .
