Filtration and Water Changes...

A lot depends on what your tap water is like. #0 crushed coral as a substrait will stabolize the ph. Ours is a constant 7.8. I've also found that its a LOT easier to add in what you need when you start out with 0 TDS water. ALL tap water possesses harmful trace elements in low concentrations. Personally I like knowing whats going in my tanks and not relying on the fact that no ones died yet as a guage. For the most part...water on the east coast is notoriously bad as far as polutants go.

The reason why you guys in cali use RO water is cause your water is very hard and has high PH. Not sure what your talking about but water here in the east coast (New York) is perfect soft water and PH is always 7.0 and as for pollutants there are none to be found. As for harmful trace elements thats why you use carbon or prime and products like that to remove them.

SO YOUR SAYING THAT YOU USE RO WATER WITH YOUR RAYS???? AND YOU JUST HAVE CRUSHED CORAL IN YOUR TANK AND IT LOCKS IN THE PH??

i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR TECHNIQUE..... AND WHAT FISH YOU USE IT FOR..... THANKS FOR THE IMPUT.....

Yes we have harder water here in socal but if you think you don't have any harmful trace elements in your water then you seriously need to have your tap water professionally tested. A very good friend of ours has been working for years trying to correct this problem in NY state...

That said you can also set up a very effective water filter based on micron and carbon filters (10" cannister type) without the RO or DI componant and it will reduce a lot of these elements but won't ever eliminate them.

The FDA allows 500 ppm TDS (total desolved solids) in drinking (tap) water
The water comming OUT of our tanks during a water change is rarely ever higher than 380 and normally it's about 120 or below.

dosmatics dosing pump r/o water if your doing a reef or salt water.... or if no chloramines then just use carbon filters....

I have my water tested by a testing company ever 6 months and have to date not found any harmful trace elements. We get reports on tests from the company for all Metals,PH,Chlorine,Chloramine and Trace elements. You might be confused with someone who is using well water as here on Long Island we do not have any well water.
The crushed coral will raise your PH and make the water harder. I used it at my facility in the beginning before i installed my W/C system to keep the PH stabilized. Once i got the auto W/C working there was no need to use crushed coral and the ph stabilized at a perfect 7.0 and never changes. My system is 8000 gallons and i W/C 700 gallons in a 24 hr period every day.

WOW...., THATS A LOT OF WATER...... U MUST HAVE ONE HELL OF A WATER BILL......, SO HOW LONG DID IT TAKE BEFORE YOU REALIZED THAT THE WAS THE AMOUNT NEEDED IN ORDER TO STABILIZE THE PH AT 7.0....., ALSO WHY NOT A LITTLE LOWER......, TO TRY TO MIMICK THE WILD...?? GOOD STUFF......, CANT WAIT TO DO THIS MYSELF.....

Water bill is free at my building the landlord pays it lol love that. At first i started out doing 1000 gallons a day and it instantly stabilized my PH so i lowered it down slightly to do about 10% a day and there was no change at all. My PH from my tap is 7.2 so the only way to lower it would be to use a buffer and thats just costs lots of money plus with always dumping 7.0-7.2 water in my system from the tap it only raises it back up. There is really no reason to try and mimick the wild all these breeders now a days are doing it in PH higher then mine and with lots of success. You want a stabile PH and not one thats constantly rising and falling. Been working for me why chage it.
