What kind of filtration would be the best way to go for a 200 gallon tank? Or would a combonation of filter types be best?

I have been around fish tanks through my father for a good portion of my life. But they have always been 30 gallon tanks. And I would imagine that much larger tanks can be a completely different monster to operate. Especially making sure that I get enough filtration.

I would do a wet dry. You can buy them on Ebay search for "wet dry filter". If you are handy you can build one, i am not so i buy them!

I have never heard of a wet\dry filter. I'll have to look it up. I am moderately handy, but a friend of mine is pretty good at building things. As far as a good mech (mechanical?) filter, what would you catergorize as one. Possibly a large hob filter?

A wet / dry filtration system is a great option. You will want a model that has about 8 - 10 cu. gallons of media (bio balls) for a 200 gallon aquarium. The pre filter sponge in the overflow box in combination with a micron rated filter pad at your drip tray should perform adequate mechanical filtration unless you have extra messy fish or a really large number of fish. In that case, perhaps a canister or a large pleated type filter like the Ocean Clear model 317 for example would be a thought.

Building a wet / dry is not that tough but I would sugest buying a real good quality overflow / pre-filter box instead of trying to build you own. Poor quality or design overflow boxes can fail and easily cause a flood.

Howdy,

I have a 220 gal. I'm a canister guy: Eheim Pro 3

My 185 galon uses an internal 800liter/hr filter. Risky but it was cheap and I was broke.

Point is, you'll want to completely cycle the tank about 2 or 3 times per hour so any filter with a 400 - 600galon/hr powerhead will do. Just stay away from those damn chinese brands.

Get a wet/dry its best. ask ur lfs for one or just make it
