I have never heard of a wet\dry filter. I'll have to look it up. I am moderately handy, but a friend of mine is pretty good at building things. As far as a good mech (mechanical?) filter, what would you catergorize as one. Possibly a large hob filter?

a large hob like a hot magnum would make a good back up and a good mech filter

for me it depends... i currently have xp3 Filstar and it goes up to 175 gal aquarium. right now i'm using it for my 60 gals... and it seems the poops and dirt doesn't get sucked up as i was expecting. cleaning is monderate... not easy coz i need to get the whole thing out and clean it.... i'm getting a 180 gal next week and i might try wet/dry filter (i'm lazy) to have an easier access to the filter pads. :D besides the wet/dry filter cost almost 40-50% more but the pads are cheap.... now on the xp3 it runs as cheap as $110 and some would even sell it for $179. the mechanical and chemical filters will most likely make you pay more. :(

you can find cheap stuff at ebay and here are some reliable websites i have ordered dozens fo stuffs and they are excellent:

good luck! :grinyes:
