the 70 would be enough on a 55 but I'm less happy with the bio-filtration on AC's the sponge filter would be a MUST in that case. Yes they make the SC's for the penguins and they work great.
so penguin 350 w/ supercatridges and the hydro5?

Thats what I would...and in fact (with an E400) DO use on a couple of 50/55 gallon tanks. I ran a 60 that way for a year or more before replacing the E400 with a 405 cannister.

alright, one more question (i dont want to bug,but im noobish when it comes to sponges) will a 175 gph powerhead work well? or should i get the air pump instead? i have 2 175gph powerheads just sitting there and i feel bad not putting them to use

if i could find a cheap e400 ill do it,so far a e400 is like 15$ more than i would like to pay

use the penguin and an air driven sponge filter. upgrade to the SC's later on and pick up a battery powered air pump for emergancy use.

IMO yes. and I'm a long time Marinedand fan. The dual pump arangement allows better flow and prevents bio-wheel stalling. The bio-wheels themselves have much more serface area and the media chambers are largers. That said...I'd avoid any of the B model E400's or E280's. These are the ones with the 'flow control' knobs. they dont work very well...cause excessive noise and tend to make the filters harder to restart. Marineland scrapped the feature by the way and all of the new ones went back to the original style.

The problem with the penguins isn't that they don't work but that they require a lot more maintaince to keep running. That said... I have a penguin 300 in my extras box that ran for 20 years and still does a great job when needed.

are these the ones your talking about? (again, sorry for the mass amount of questions)

once again, thanks for the massive amount of help youve offered

The questions are no problem at all and yes thats them. The second one is NOT a B model but the first one MIGHT be. you cant tell unless the ad says...adjustable flow.
I have 3 used ones in the extras box at the moment and 4 new ones in boxes sitting behind me. LOL I reciently cut back on the number of filters I was running due to rising power bills. It adds up when you have a LOT of tanks running. But before you ask....I never sell anything I might have a later use for...

I can tell you that I've picked E400's (usually the damned B models) up on Ebay used for $20.00 plus shipping.
