Hello all, I'm buying a new aquarium it is the same size as my current one but mine is a bit old now.

I currently run a 4.5 ft sump which contains filter sock into sponges and floss, then into more sponges then into alpha grog and then back to the tank.

I'm wanting to significantly increase filtration with this tank sump will be 4ft can people recommend a better way to add filtration to this?

Was thinking of adding an fx5 or a pond filter.


Any help more be appreciated.

Hi, if I was you I’d redo the sump and make it into a fluidised bed with k1. They are most efficient filter imo but they are a bit noisy.

I agree with the above. A 4ft sump.full of k1 micro, around 150l of media would be more than enough for that tank.

Forget the fx5 they use loads of electricity and don't achieve a huge amount compared to a sump.

Thank for the advice. I've not used K1 before so a bit nervous about using it, so the k1 works better then sponges etc? How would you design the sump would, a trickle tower into filter sock into K1 into sponges etc be the way to set it up?

Go on my build thread, shows my old 4ft sump, custom made, so water drains first into a settlement chamber, then comes up and goes through poly floss and sponges for mech and severance ceramics and then into main k1 micro chamber.

I then just siliconed knitting mesh over baffles to stop media escaping lol

Works great as settlement chambers catches most of the big ray poo, so only change out the floss weekly and rinse sponges every month or so.

Thank you for the link, k1 must be able to hold not BB then I presumed it could I will have it in my set up was just worried about it holding enough for rays bioload but obviously worrying for no reason. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

K1 does not have as big a surface area as most other media’s. But it is far more efficient... other media’s will eventually get clogged with dead bacteria until you painstakingly clean it. Because k1 is fluidised (k1 is no good unless it’s fluidised) it’s constantly banging into each other so only the younger, more efficient bacteria can settle on it. This also makes it self cleaning because all the detritus is knocked off..., but like I said, because it’s fluidised it does make it a bit noisy compared to a standard submerged sump. So not ideal if it’s in you living room may be.
