filtration for a 220g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I plan on using either a 55g or 65g tank for my 220g, although I'm also going to be using a canister filter for additional filtration. But a 55g sump, if designed correctly, should be enough filtration for a 220g tank IMO).

I'm using a 29g sump on a 125g tank, and that more than does the job, so a 55g on a 220g should be good.

Either tank would be fine.

If your planning on useing a 4ft long 55 why not just go for a 75g tank to use as your sump? they are relatively cheap enough. If you get on craigs list you can usualy find 75's for DIRT cheap. If your gonna burn 4ft worth of stand space get the most out of it imo, and get the biggest 4 footer you can comfortably stuff in there. The reason I say that is because if your anything like me your going to want to experiment with your filtration and the bigger 75 will let you have a larger "do what you want here" chamber that will let you put anything from an algae scrubber to a fully planted refugium for nutrient export or bags of aragonite/peat for chemical buffering of your water, the options are limitless. Its just a waste imo to have a sump and just pack it with polyfill and scrubbies. If thats all you plan on doing then just hook an FX5 up to the overflows in your tank and call it a day, you will get the same effect.

I did the Cheap way and got a 35gal tote tub and shoved it under teh tank. Used trashcans as sections and drilled holes in the Trash cans for the spillovers and works nicely! about 30 bucks so far without the pump or overflow yet.

While your point is well made, I think his reasoning is that he already has a 40g and 55g tank, so why go out and buy another one?

I'm actually debating the same thing, either using a 55g tank I already have, or selling it and buying a tank with slightly different dimensions instead.

Ahhh I see, well the best option in that case would be to use the 55 imo. Or if he isnt in a rush or or has the money to do it I would still get a 75 and sell the other 2 to off set the cost . You would think after going through the troubble of setting up a 220g tank you would want to spare the extra 100 bucks for the bigger sump. After selling the other 2 tanks its very likely that he would break even on the cost of a CL 75.
