Hey MFK

I will be setting up a new 270 GAL tank to keep 5-6gars and 2rays.

On the box of an FX5 says "up to 400GAL tank" Will that be enough for my fishes?

Will The FX5 alone be enough for both my Mechnical and biological filtration?

Please give me more ideas if you have any.

Thanks guys!
Cheers!

Nope. When those fish get full size you will want weekly water changes of 30%+ and at least one backup canister filter.

Have you thought about a wet/dry. If money is an issue which it usually is lol at least for me.. You can do a diy wet/dry out of a used tank or rubber maid. A wet/dry would really help, you probably wouldn't need anything else after a wet/dry.

i second that i have a 210 gallon with a ehim pro 3 and a fx5 and do alot of water changes . it does stay clean though:) the filters are cleaned every other month. this works out good for me

i am thinking about it. I am having a bit of problems designing the overflow. Will just a surface skimmer work out? ill be running a bare bottom tank. dont want to have dead spots of fish poo in my tank. Don't nessery need crystal clear water. Just clean water will do.

A good fix for any dead spots is a power head especially on a bare bottom. Aim the power head at the bottom and nothing at all should just sit there..
