Filtration for a 270GAL Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a 280 bare bottom and all i run is one FX-5... works just fine for me. but i do 50-70% water changes a week... just because i want to, my water quality has never dropped due to the lack of filteration.
i had a sump before my FX-5 and i can say i will not have another sump on any tank of mine... but thats just me

i have 6 peacock bass from 6-12" and a motoro stingray.

i run a 120g cls sump on my 270g with about 10x the return & twice a week wc's....
one being 20% and the other being 40% this gives me pristine water quality and looks.
btw my sump is filled with AAA grade japanese matts, bio-balls, ceramic rings, real plants
& a lot of floss with the addition to super thick filter socks on each end of the drains... it is a
pita sometimes keeping up with twice a week wc's but i told myself i wont neglect my
fishy duties anymore so a good sump and a little effort should be all you need :) lol

a proper setup sump will rape a fx5 any day, though that fx5 can be used as one powerful automatic gravel vac! lol XD

a proper set-up sump will cost twice as much as an FX-5. a pump alone can cost $200.00 (mine did anyway) plus a tank and DIY parts, blah blah blah. for what i had in a DIY tank sump i could have bought an FX-5 and had $100 left over. plus the FX-5 is 100x easier to set-up than a sump.

IMO- i will buy two FX-5's and never run a sump again.

a fx5 will cost you more money in the long run; running @ 400watts...
running 2 fx5 is 800watts just on filtration alone... dont just think about
whats infront of you think about the long run... whats the point of buyin
a monster setup and running 2 fx5s when in the future you cant maintain
it because your electric and utility bills rose unexpectedly high out of no
where...

its 100x easier to setup maybe... but a sump is 100x better! :D

I have two FX5s on my 260. My tank is lightly stocked (2 Cichla, 2 Gars, 1 Irwini, and 1 Tig), and the FX5s do just fine. When I had these fish plus 3 other Cichla, I had trouble keeping my parameters in check, even with weekly water changes.

Oh cr@p... I mixed the gallonage wise and the watts... lol! I take back what I said but a sump is still better! Not hatin on canisters just sayin mho.
