Im planning a 125g sump with k1 media. What size pump do you guys recommend for the returns? Theres 2 returns and tank is 6x4x30 450g

how big are the returns?
and what fish what load, good average is 6-8 times the volume... so you may want to aim for 3000 turn over? plus some head loss,

1.5-2 in returns.... Bio load is 5 peacock bass and possibly some rays and a arowana

1.5" returns i would use a reeflo/barracuda hybrid pump it would give you 8 to 10 times turnover but i am not sure that would work good with k1.

What media would work with that pump, ive read if your pushing over 6x the flow rate it doesnt give beneficial bacterua enough time to be effective

I don't believe that's true. To size a pump, you first decide what turnover you want to have for the tank, and then get 2 pumps that each provide half that flow rate. I like to have 2 pumps in the sump, submersible pumps because they're quieter.

So, like Takagari said, you want to have around 3000 GPH pump output. Divide that by 2, you want 2 1500 GPH pumps. Then figure you'll have 5 feet of head height (sump on the floor, directly under the tank, tank is 30 inches high, stand is 30 inches high), and you'll have 2-3 90's in the run of return pipe, you'll be lucky to get 2000 GPH delivered to the display tank.

So.....buy a pair of Laguna MaxFlo 2400's.

Now....about K1 Media....are you really sure you need that? Talk to the Stingray guys in that forum, ask them if they think K1 is absolutely necessary. Or can you get away with Rays and Arowana with just bags of Matrix in the sump.

I know K1 is what all the cool kids are doing these days, but it's expensive, and takes some planning and trial and error to get the right turnover of the media with the air pump? I think? And if there's a big air pump involved, it's gonna be noisy, too. I don't like noisy tanks.

great points and ideas I'll get two pumps, and I don't think k1 is necessary just wanted to give it a try lol. Are bio balls a better choice or pot scrubbies, I know pot scrubbies have more surface area. IDK what to go with there's also ceramic media

I do have a K1 set up on my 600 gallon but I run a separate pump at 900 gph through it (55 gallon Rubbermaid trash can 50L of knockoff K1) from my sump I run 2 jebao 12000lph pumps, and I have a poor mans ultima set up (21" Hayward pool sand filter stuffed full of ultimate 2 media) with 3k gph pumped through it so close to 10x turnover. If you are going to have stingrays I would recommend using K1 in your setup it can handle very large bio loads stingrays produce approximately 10x more waste than fish from what I've learned in the stingray section. If your like me I started with one ray and now on my way to owning 5 rays they are very addictive.
