Filtration for a 8x4x2 Stingray Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would change 100gal per day via the HMA your tank will be half the size of mine and i change 200gal per day

the HMA was the best thing i done the tank has been set up near 2 years now and i have never had to do 1 manaul water change

i change the HMA cartriges every 3 months

get as big a sump as possible and pump loads of air into it via a massive pond air pump i also have 2 big air stones one in each of my weirs to move the water around in them

the only thing you need to worry about with pumping lots of cold fresh water is the temp dropping but i have some massive pumps in my sump and without the cold water pumping in my tank sits at 92 without any heaters so i adjust the heat with the cold water

I for one am still not sold on these presurized backflushing filters.

Maybe it's cause it's hard for me to wrap my mind around the thought of one media performing both mechanical and biological filtering.

Maybe it's the cost.

Maybe it's cause I know the guy with the most money in rays in the country just swapped out his Ultimas for moving bed filters that use Kaldness.

I will be able to tell you first hand pretty soon. I am also skeptical on the mechanical ability that is why I am pre-filtering with filter socks.

With the amount of room under my stand the Ultimas where pretty much my best option. They should arrive any day now. I will eventually be converting my whole sump into a pothos type planted setup and just using the socks for mechanical and 2 ultima 1000s for bio. I am on a mission to get my Nitrates to a level that won't show up on an api test kit :). Probably will never happen with my stock but we shall see.

With sound being an issue you would have to go with a closed system or you will hear splashing water and large pumps humming away. I would go with the canister filters listed below. In my opinion they are the best money can buy, they have 4 trays in each one so you can load up with media. In my setup I am running a Mag 18 that supplies two of these filters which bumps the output of each one to around 1430 gph with no head pressure which will give you 2860 gph per pair. Do 4 of these filters with 2 mag 18s and you should get what you want as far as noise and media capacity along with 5720 gph max output. You would have to go bigger without a drip system but you have that in the plan so these will work fine. You also get 9 watt UVs in each one. Not much but still is an added bonus.

With Rays and the sticky corkscrew pooo!!! i would personally no matter what pre filter with a sump and socks !!!!!That being said though the Ultima even though being a very good product does not provide enough Mechanical alone for rays IMO and i am not certain that the crushed glass would not get overloaded without being prefiltered a little to remove the large waste first ......Otherwise you would have to be backwashing constantly if this tank was stocked with lets say 4 adult rays!!!!

i dont use socks they block up to fast and before you know it your water isw not draining out of the main tank fast enought

just use one compartment of the sump filled with jap mat and clean it every 2-3 months socks are for feet not filters

You must have little feet.....

I use (4) 7x15 200/100 micron socks and they work great. I clean them every other week, although I've went a month before and water still wasn't bypassing them. Simply huck them in the washing machine after a rinse cycle and socks are clean.

It could be argued that jap mat was originally used in Japan as mats in front of doors to wipe shoes on, and not for filters. ;)

My whole thing with that is if you have the room why stress the filter with large chunks of fecal matter when you don't have to this is just my way doesn't have to be everybody's;)
