I have a 75 gallon tank with one oscar fish. Currently have a fluval 406 and aqueon 75/90 hang on the back filter on it. Im trying to get away from the hob filters. Would the fluval 406 be enough filtration?

No way would I agree that the Fluvial 406 is enough filtration on a 75gal for an Oscar. Oscar's are one of the messiest fish you can own. I would say ok to the 406 if you are very diligent about your water changes. But if you have the HOB why not use it. Or sell it and use whatever you get for it towards preferably an Eheim. It you can not get an Eheim than I would settle for the Fluval 406. But if the Fluvial 406 and similar to the 405 I would not buy it.
I recently had the 406, its good; but for me the maintenance was a pain, especially the pipework etc, it might sound counterintuitive, but I preferred two Fluval U4's, much quicker and easier to clean on a weekly basis.
I'd run the 406 and a large sponge if you can clean the 406 easily each week, which is what will be required for an Oscar; or it will get blocked up sooner than later

the way I understood it. I need double the volume of the tank in filtration per hour. But ive also heard that you should aim towards five times the volume. I was looking at either just removing the hob filter or addind a second cainster filter to the tank. Why would be the benfit of having a hob filter on the tank vs replacing it with a second cainster filter?
I have a 265G and am Very Very over stocked with 9 Oscars, a Rhino Pleco, a Sailfin Pleco, a Featherfin Catfish, 2 Pangasius Catfish, 2 Bushynose Pleco, 2 Electric Blue Acara, 1 Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, and a Mated pair of Convicts with Fry as we speak.
I'm filtering with 3 Fluval FX5s, 1 Eheim Classic 600, and a Turbotwist 36W UV Sterilizer... And gravel vac and swap 50% water weekly.
Oscars are by far my favorite fish to keep and what your hearing here is 100% correct they are the messiest fish ever.
Always over filter. If you want to get rid of the Hob I would suggest you scour craigslist for a Fluval FX5 or an Eheim Pro III. Once the second canister is established reconfigure your 406 to a mechanical/ polishing canister. Stay on top of your water changes and honestly a strategically placed Sponge filter and Powerhead wouldn't hurt...

I agree with everything said so far. I currently have two oscars in a 75g, soon to be 150g. Current filtration is penn plax 1200, emperor 400 hob and large sponge filter doing 30-50% wc weekly. I bought an eheim 2217 for the 150g and will get another as soon as it's setup. I've had oscars before and they can never have enough filtration. They're just like my kids, eat, poop, make a mess and I'm the one that has to clean it up. But I love them, awesome fish.
