i'm really starting to second guess myself on the 18" height on this thing.... too late to go back now... do you guys think this is enough height for a longish amount of time?

Its all good lol. I guess realistically by the time they need more height on the tank they will probably need a longer wider tank as well anyways...

Height isn't that important until they hit the 18'' mark and then as you said it's time for another tank!I think an fx5 along with the 405 will be fine. The best eheim alternative is the 2080 bit is a lot more expensive. You shouldn't need more filtration till they outgrow that tank.
