Filtration for Cichlid 75G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes theres no baskets what so ever, its just a big bucket pretty much, letting you put whatever you want in there! people often times appreciate the little reservoir where the intake first goes into, incase of fry or small fish get sucked in, they cant be sucked in the propeller because its at the top. its in my and many others oppinion, the best filter for the money (2217 classic)

cool,

And I have indeed found the EHEIM 2217 to be cheaper than the fluval 305 Ive been looking at.

So hows this sound

AC110 - 2 sponges + some bio media

the EHEIM 2217, with quilt batting, substratepro & mech pads... Only thing discouraging is the EHEIM bio media is very expensive. Although reading that is re-usable if BOILED and bleached?

ahh. Forgot I will be putting crushed coral in the canister as well. to help buffer water 'cichlids'.

Not sure where I would have room for this in the EHIEM??.. Guess I can order it and find out!

Hey, sorry I missed this thread, I spent the new year out of town and lost track of it. Did you order the eheim? Do you like it?

Backflushing means I just let water flow through it backwards. If you turn it off and take the "intake" side apart at the quick release valves, the intake valve will rotate down. I set my filter on top of a 5 gallon bucket that is upside down, and put the intake valve facing down into another 5 gallon bucket. Then if you open the valve going to your spraybar and then the valve coming out of the canister on the intake, water will siphon out of the tank into the 5 gallon bucket. You can also take the head off the canister and pour buckets of tank water through the filter so it comes out the intake valve at the bottom. It cleans out a lot of the crap in the filter and makes it so you can go longer without tearing the filter apart.

Yeah, the stuff is reusable- I've had mine for a couple years and it's fine. The filter comes with enough media to completely fill it, but you can easily leave out some of something else to make room for the crushed coral. A couple handfuls of the bio media layer should be fine, as the crushed coral will act as bio media. Its not as effective, but honestly, the stuff in there is WAY more efficient than the water flow allows it to be, so taking out a couple handfuls doesn't make a difference either way, IME.

I put a sponge from an AC110 over the intake on my 2217. It helps a LOT- take it out and rinse it in the sink once a week and you remove a ton of bigger waste from the tank so the filter never even has to process it. Useful with messy eaters.
