Hi,
I have recently been told that to keep any decent size fish in the Juwel Vision 450 litre tank, i will need an external filter as the Juwel Filter is said to be not efficient for messy cichlids eg: Oscars, Pirahnas etc.
And i dont want there to be any fish i can't keep within reason.

I do intend to keep the Juwel filter in the tank as it is brand new and i dont wish to butcher it, could anybody advise me on what size external filter i should get baring in mind that the juwel filter will be operating as well (hoping that i wont need such a big external filter with 2 running at once).

Thanks Danny

I would recommend you pick a canister filter that has water throughput 2-3x your tank size liter/hour.
I have experience with Rena XP4(1500l/h) and Tetra EX1200 (1200l/h) canister and recommend you get the EX1200, it's great, very quiet and all filter media is included!
The XP4 is noisy! I have my 105gal in my bedroom and I had to switch over to the Tetra.

I replied on your other thread but I'll post it here as well. I would go for an Eheim 2217. They are very efficient (rate flow w/ media vs competitors that measure w/o media). They are also very quiet and they last forever.

The previous poster mentioned Tetra, I guess some people have luck with their products but I have never been one of them. :(

Just out of curiosity what problems did you have with Tetra?

Just about every Tetra product I have had has died a early death for one reason or another. I currently have two tetra air pumps, one for my 55 and one for my 210. I've had them for two or three months now. They both started out relatively quiet, I can now hear them just about all the time and have put them on timers so that they only run when the lights are on. This way they are quiet when I go to sleep. I still turn them off when we have company over though. I even have them setting on foam and inside the cabinets under the tanks.

Many thanks to Kaladar and LowCell for your advice on the filters, this will help me alot.
By the way, as a matter of interest, what do you think of the equavalent Fluval and Aqua One Canister Filters?

I haven't run a fluval but from most reviews that I have read I would stay away from them unless you go for the fx5. If you would like to save a little money check out the Rena Filstar XP3 filter. I am using them on a couple of my tanks and they are reliable. They do have to be cleaned out more often than the Eheims though. I have to clean them about twice as much as I do the Eheims. Other than that I have no complaints with the Rena's. The good news is that it only takes about ten minutes to clean them. :)

Ive just read a great thread on the fluval fx5 vs one of the Eheims. It stated that the Eheim was the better but dearer filter but for the fluval to be matched against the eheim would it be fair to say that the fluval fx5 is one of the best canister filters on the market, as the shop local to where i live is a main fluval dealer. Therefore would be easier for me to get parts etc.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Danny

The FX5 is a very good filter and for the money I don't know if it can be beat.

Thanks LowCel,
I'll get that today for my Juwel Vision 450
