filtration for my 230 gallon...

You could always put the sump next to the tank as well unless its going inside your house or somewhere were space is an issue.

You can't fit a 55 under your 230? I use a 30 as a sump for my 150. I love it.

the stand is custom built. it has 4 doors on it, and its a 5 feet tank... so the space between gaps is less than 1.25 feet.

I had a 55 gallon for my 220 and because of the placement of the overflows in the tank the water level dropped 3" in power outage. This madd the 55 basically to small it was such a close fit that I had to run the sump at a really low level just to keep it from over flowing in power down. This had the down side of me having to refile the sump more often.

So if you do a sump and overflows be sure you take into account not only the running level of the sump but how much water the sump will have to hold when the power goes off. Nothing worse then findout when its operational that you can't shut it down without flooding.

Think of a sump as a giant canister filter. With an internal or external pump (I use an external). Google "how to make a sump" and you'll find all types of designs.

Well for the same price that you buy a new FX5 from Ebay (~220), you can have a sump that will provide better bio and mech(with filter sock), and better flow as well(depends on the pump you buy). It is also way easier to clean and you dont have to disconnect anything to do so!

Heres a good video on what you will need to build out of PVC if you decide to go with the Sump method.

I would definitely recommend going with a sump, but a sump and an FX5 would not be a bad idea either. There is a wealth of information available online pertaining to sump operation and construction.
