Filtration for my 500

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The canisters only had media, no pads, etc. Im actually adding one more Emperor 400 because it looks uneven with two on one side and one on the other. But I just use the pads that come with the filter, nothing extra.

so your media is only for BB and the pads are for catching particles? sounds like i'll be okay. thanks for your posts.

That will be enough. I'm doing the same thing (filtration) on my 450. I use my Nu-Clear filters just for mechanical filtration and the trickle system keeps the water quality in check. Initially I was checking my water almost weekly and tweaking the trickle up or down as needed. Now I do a sanity check every 3 to 4 months. As the fish grow, eating more, I need to slightly adjust my trickle. I'm up to about two gallons an hour now. The plants around the house love it. I ran the trickle to a garden hose and move the hose to a different tree or bush every couple days.

how do you figure out the rate? i mean, do you really put you trickle line into a bucket for an hour an let it run or have you figured out a drip rate per minute equal a gallon rate per hour?

i got some granite, for counter tops, to use to hold down my driftwood. i am wondering if i can use brass screws to connect the driftwood to the granite? i'll be working on that today.

also i am ready to start stocking my tank. i was wondering who most of you use for on-line purchases of livestock? and when you order do you tend to get 2 or 3 even if you only want one because you expect to have losses from shipping stress? i have never shipped fish.

when i use to ship coral i'd give them a dip in iodine to kill parasites, do you do anything like that with the fish you ship in to rid them of parasites or disease?

still waiting for my driftwood to get water logged. seems like slow progress but that is the best i can do right now.... i added some rocks for weight to hold down the big piece.

the new driftwood is really releasing some tannins, no change in pH though

Nice tank! That huge piece of wood might take a long time to become fully water logged and will probably leech tannins for even longer.

so what do you think is a "long time"? the bigger piece i found at the lake and had been in water probably all summer. i wouldn't mind knowing how long it'll be until i can fill the tank? :):)
the smaller piece on the left side, i found out hunting with my son. it is a cool looking twisted root but was bone dry. it is the one that is leaching the tannins. before i put it in the tank water was fairly clear. i think it is stuck down with the slab of granite i have it screwed to so not worried about it floating away.

To give you an idea:

I had a 10" piece of natural driftwood I found at the river in one of my tanks. I brought it home soaked, and it sank immediately. At one point I removed it for a week or so and it dried out. I put it in another tank and THREE MONTHS LATER it's still not completely soaked. It's in a little breeder/growout tank so no biggie. Just thought I'd let you know the 'potential' time it could take.
