Filtration for reef set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is not just clear but clean, but yes.

I have found that it is safe to buy dry rock (I used Feller Stone's Antique Coral) and add really good rock on top of that (at least on epound per gallon of high quality actual live rock). The dry rock will become live rock over time.

You will likely have issues over time, and you will have to catch them eraly and do what you need to do to deal with them.

craigslist, and local reef clubs/fourms have great deals on live rock......on my local reef clubs' fourm i can get live rock for 2.99 a pound often times......typically when people tear their larger tanks down......

also live sand for free, or very cheap......(not the bagged crap, but sand they had in their system)

just an idea, something to try out / check into

So just the live rock, the skimmer and some powerheads are all I need to have realy clear water?

im not saying this is what everyone does or what everyone needs to do,

BUT:
i was told by some members on a reef fourm to blow off my rocks with a turkey baster (i use a coral feeder CLICK HERE)

this is because as the live orginsims on the rock do eat waste and etc, and also inverts, but some does build up, so if you blow it off -alot more of that crud will make it to your skimmer and refugium area to be filtred out......

I sell cured LR for $1 a # or a little more depending on coral coverage...yes these come out of my softie tank.

I sell aragonite for $0.50 a #.

You can do craiglisters for this stuff, just be careful, you dont want to buy stuff that has been medicated...or has gone bad for other reasons. If the rock is "used" buyer beware.

+1 to "cleaning" your rocks. I just use a powerhead to blow the crap off.
