Filtration Ideas

HOB overflow (just get a high quality one - Lifereef) or get a cannister.

Here's my 2 cents.
I don't think there is anything magical about a pressurized can with water running thru it. In fact I believe anything that is not user friendly to disassemble and/or clean, is not worth the trouble. So to me, a HOB is just as effective, as long as pumpage is similar, and is much easier to clean. So unless they have somehow made canisters much more user friendly to clean well, it isn't done, and that has a much more significant effect on water quality than not.
And a stated above, I have drilled tanks with fish in them, during a water change, and it's no big deal.

I am currently setting up a sump for my tank but I would have to say that there are places for both canisters and HOB filters. Generally, canisters are capable of holding more media and having a higher flow (not always, but usually). In addition, one of the big advantages I see with them is the very low rear clearance that they require. You only need clearance for the inlet and return line to fit as opposed to needing the clearance for the entire filter.

I would say that HOB's are, generally, easier to clean though.

Is there a way to tell if the tank is tempered or not? I forgot to mention that we didn't know if it was or wasn't.

Should be pretty simple. I would recommend using them fluidized. You can use a filter sock or two as your mechanical filtration and then run a few small power heads or some air stones to keep the pot scrubbies moving around. Then, you could install a piece of egg crate to separate the return pump and keep it from sucking up the pot scrubbies.
