FILTRATION IS KEY

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
On my 220 am having a sump setup. I used to run 2 SunSun 304 series on my earlier 125. In my sump I have almost 5-6 times more bio media, and power consumption almost half of 125 setup. Almost silent operation too.

Using 100 micron Filter Socks in sump, for mechanical filtration keeps my water clean as possible.

I filter all my tanks as simply as possibly. I have four 265s and a 170. All on Matten Filters. On three 265s and the 170 I use one air pump, an Alita 80 to power the jet lifters behind the mattens. No other means of filtration. I keep small fish all the up to a 23" L191. The other 265 sits on the opposite side of the basement so for now it's on it's own air pump. I clean the mattens around ever 8 months or so, one I haven't cleaned for about 15 months. I do weekly water changes, gravel vacs, that's it. Can't do it here but the next house will be an automatic drip system. I hate wasting time cleaning all the other filters, replacing media, sponges, etc.

Hello; Do you literally mean the water froze? I have had power outages in winter for several days with no loss of fish. The trick is to have a light stocking load so that the fish can survive without any power. I get this is not popular.

Hello; That was a big load of fish to put into a problem tank. You may have had a serious ammonia spike.

Hello; A trick in stocking is to get fish one or a few at a time. This allows the beneficial bacteria time to adjust to the ammonia load.
The water didn’t freeze put ice formed at the top a little and I had a very good filter media and I dumped 1 gallon of good bacteria into the tank to get a cycle going and did water changes every 4 days just in case the bacteria didn’t work
