Filtration issues

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
200 micron, would this work? I’m not entirely sure how filter socks function, I thought it was just tying it the the tube where the water flows out.

Don’t think they’ll answer me, i checked their website and they mentioned they don’t take calls regularly and this brand is US based, I live in Singapore.
Do you think medium pores would be better, if I were to purchase the foam I posted above?

Just for extra info, Started this thread because I would be enlisting into the army de Jan 2nd 2024, and wouldn’t be able to take care of the tank as much such as changing the filter wool often, so I’m trying to improve filtration currently 😂

Those would work yes… but for a very short time. U wanna get the biggest socks u can. Could probably construct a tray to hold like 6 of those to have a shot at not changing them almost daily. I use “utahbiodieselsupply.com” for larger 7”x16” and 7”x32” socks, i know ur in canada tho. Try searching for not a “fish place” filter sock and theyll be alot cheaper. Gotta be a similiar just general supply type store. Septic systems use the larger 7”x32” socks so its a common type part. I buy em in bulk and just throw them away after 6 months to a year use. Wasteful i know lol… i used to wash them in the washing machine with a cup of bleach then peroxide to neutralize the bleach.

Hey, listen to y’all’s advice, thanks everyone who helped. Added the foam to the lower section of the tray. Now I have double filtrations in my aquarium, both wool and the foam. I can see it definitely improving my filtration! Great idea esoxlucius esoxlucius , thank you.

Also went and heeded the advice of getting the filter sock. However, i faced the issue of even putting the filter sock into the pipe. It’s nearly quite impossible. Any suggestions?

I friction fit a piece of PVC to the effluent pipe with a lip to loop the zip tie behind.
In this way when I want to clean the sock, it easily pull off the friction fit PVC, and not worry about wrangling the zip tie off the lip end while in the sump.

In the shot above, the zip ties tightened just above the PVC elbowss lip.
When cleaning is needed, the PVC elbow easily slips off the influent line.

In your case, you could drill the sump top to fit the sock part in, but the plastic ring sitting on top.
But as stated above, unless you rinse the sock daily, there is a chance it will plug up and overflow.
Note on mine above, it sits on an angle to allow overflow into the sump if I forget to rinse or change them out fast enough.
