55 gal community tank with Eheim 2028 - its rated for 160g and says it has approx 275 gph flow.

I have been reading peoples setups and some people use, for example, 2 hang on back filters which "say" that combined they will filter 600 gph.

This is rougly 2.5x the output that i am getting.

I have no doubt that the amount of media in the eheim is superior to that of any hang on back filter, but what about the output levels? Should i be concerned about this? Or, is this 275 (which is about 5 water changes per hour) considered sufficient?

the main problem that I see with canister filters is that you don't get the gas exchange that you do with an HOB filter.

I had a 125 that had 2 XP3s on it and the fish were gasping for air so I added an AQ110 on it and they stopped gasping.

You can solve this problem by creating more surface movement..by placing the spray bar higher or directing it more upward

I have a 75g tank with an Eheim 2215 and a Penguin 350.

While the eheim is rated to a lower gph, the motor doesn't slow down nearly as much. Even with filter media, and extended amounts of time running, building up detritus, the eheim will still run nearly where it is rated. HOB filters will slow down very fast, and won't have nearly the turnover they claim.
