Do you think filters are needed for turtles?

I, and alot of Turtle keepers do exactly this......I run through and change water every 2-7 days depending on the species and time of year......I've never had any issues because of it.......I'm about ready to invest in a siphon though......

I use a sponge filter. Not the kind where you stick the airstone into it, but it's basically a little powerhead with a sponge over the spot where it sucks up the water.

I do it to keep the water clear. Who wants to do 100% water changes each day? And besides, waste can still build up in the water... and they have to drink that water and swim in it.

I change the turtle water weekly when I do my other fish tanks.

EricIvins, do you have a filter or just a stagnant turtle tank?

I don't have Filters, nor do I have "stagnant" Turtle enclosures.........

Read the above post..........

It really depends on the set-ups, for large indoor tanks Filtration is a necessary because doing water changes on large Tanks full of water 1-2 a week just isn't practical, and the general smell and look of the tank just isn't pleasing. For those who keep their turtles out doors in stock Tanks, Water land Tubs, etc I think Filiotartion is less needed because of the ease of changing the water in them. Just install a drain and have a water hose nearby and your pretty good to go.

IMO, a decent canister makes a huge difference with turtles. Mechanical filtration via a sponge over the intake can be cleaned daily, or as needed, and the canister full of bio media will help keep the water clean much longer- removing waste as often as possible means there's less for the biological filter to break down, and the biological filtration pulls a lot of what smells so strong out, as it uses it for food.

You don't NEED a filter for anything that has water in it. You can always rely on water changes to keep things clean. It's just that filters make it easier than doing constant water changes.

turtles have some nasty poops, seriously like the size of a crayon sometimes and when that is sitting in your water and you dont have a filter it ruins the water in your tank really quick. and if you dont have a filter and have substrate, you better be doing 100% water changes.
side note: turtles should not be sold as pets to children at all i beilieve.

Then I gess under your opinion I shouldnt have started keeping turtles when I was like 5 years old without ever becoming hill because of it and not only gattering a woule lot of experience but also having a woule lot of fun! Every child is diferent, I agree 100% that parents should reserch and be the primary care givers so that the animal never becomes neglected and should be completly pro active in searching what is the species better suited to their life style. I also find amazing people buying baby turtles for their 2-3 year old, I mean C´mon! However everything is relative, if a family has like a huge pet sulcata tortoise then for a 2 year old its no diferent then a pet goat. In my case pet baby sliders were ok because I was into observing things, and to this day they remain one of my fav species, actually I have a few survivors from those days and they remain with me after the 20 or so years that have passed by:D
