Filtration Question for Ray Keepers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sounds good to me. as long as your water parameters are doing alright. but if you feel like you need to upgrade, go for it.

I just found 2 40 gallon tubs last night that will fit inside my stand.. I'm thinking of using filter socks and loading them with 20 gallons of media each, and link them together and have one large pump to return back to the tank..

i would say start thinking about upgrading. as the load starts geting bigger and u need to do more water changes, it will get harder and harder for the bio to keep up.

better to have more then enough when keeping rays.

i like having tons of bio so i can add and subtract as many rays as i want w out any problems...

Sounds good, but I think it is a higher risk for you to swap. All your beneficial bacteria colonies need to be re-established. If everything is fine, why mess with it? Pay close attention to the water perimeters if u do make the change.

I haven't figured out how exactly i'm gonna make the change yet, i have to get all the stuff and get all the media ready for the new setup..

What are you running in the fx5's for media now? To keep it simple use the filter sock idea like fishdog said into a rubbermaid bin then pump out of the rubbermaid bin into a bioreactor like vamptrev's (just installed one and they work fantastic) and the outlet of the bioreactor into the rubbermaid and then a big pump back to the tank from the rubbermaid. The only maintenance you have to do is clean the filter socks. If you want cleaner water change from 100 micron down to a smaller size. I get my filter socks at gas and oil supply houses or internet that way you can get what size and what filtration you want.

Thanks for the info guys, i'll have to PM vamptrev and see what the bioreactor is you're talking about..

Bio reactor is definetly the way to go for bio.

Mechanical is were opinions differ. Some like socks. Some like pads. I prefer pads to socks due to ease of cleaning. I can clean pads much faster and easier then I can socks. Pads you just hit with a pressure washer and flip wash other side and done. Takes me longer to flip socks inside out then to wash a set of pads.

If I was building a filter now from scratch I'd use stainless screen. I think this would be the mechanical filtration easiest to clean by far. No washing machine or power washer, just a simple rinse.

Incorporate 3 different grades into the sump either horizontally or vertically then go back up to tank, with a lower flow rate pump feeding the reactor OR gravity feed 2 reactors but if I'm not mistaken the reactors need a lower flowrate then what would typically be used on a decenet sized ray tank. I know screen/sump/reactor will be my next filtration of choice.
