+1 for cleaning the bioballs. You want to have some sort of mechanical filtration in there. Bioballs get the unwarranted nickname of "nitrate factories" which isnt necessarily true, but I do believe however that a large quantity of filthy bioballs will contribute to your nitrates
Bioballs arent a bad media, it's just that there are alot of better medias, surface area for the balls is pretty low, but if cost is the determining factor I'd say go for it.
Alot of guys on the boards swear by the rena canisters. I have however never owned one.
