filtration set up for a 75 gallon.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your looking to upgrade in the future go with the fx5 now, because it will come in handy if you do choose to upgrade.

If not go with an AC110, cheapest place being ebay to get one. Or maybe a couple Marineland hob filters.

ac 110 or ac500 as they use to be called. Flows 500gph get two for the price of one rena xp filter. Run one with duble sponges and the other one with a sponge and carbon sack. total flow 1000 gph more filtration then u would ever need. they never go bad i got one almost 15 years old probly.

And no bio media? thats not very good advice..

Always add bio media of some sort. My personal fav is bio max (hollowed ceramic rings) but any will do though. AC's come with their own bio max when bought brand new. So they should have you covered.

I would just dump the carbon out of the AC if i was you, or just leave it and use it when needed.

The way i have it set up is this....

Half of the original sponge on the bottom (cut horizontally)
And the rest is full of 5 packs of ceramic rings that they sell. Definately alot of bio media.

I started feeding hikari cichlid gold pellets and noticed my water was starting to give a stench, so i took out 2 of the ceramic ring packs, and put the carbon in.. No more smell!!!

If you have 2 AC 110's, i would recommend half a sponge and full ceramic on one, and 2 sponges + a bag of carbon on the other!

anybody want to help me out with a hyperlink for some bio media information? im interested to learn more. like how you guys use said sponges, "ceramic", etc... help out a newbie? =) i need to know about how bio media is used, installed, blah blah. currently im using some VERY standard equipment. most poor college kids probably dont make the best mfk'ers lol

Bio media is used to house the BB or beneficial bacteria in the tank. You place it after the mechanical media, that way the water passing through the bio is cleaner and rid of larger particles that can clog the bio. Clogged bio makes it less efficient in housing the BB.

I would go with two XP3's. you won't worry about one breaking down and you can take you time cleaning one while the other is still running. I run an XP3 and an Ehiem on my 120 gal. the Ehiem can go twice as long between cleanings but it's three times the cost. XP3's are great filters for the money.

Here you go. I learned a good bit from this thread when I first got in the aquarium game.
