I just picked up a 150 gal tank and I was looking to buy a new filter system for it. The tank came with a "Second Nature Whisper Power Filter", and a "Aquaclear 500". On my 30gal, and 35gal I have emperor marineland filters, which are the only filters I'm familiar with. I don't know much about any other filtration systems i.e. canister, wetdry ect... Should I use two emperor 400 or should I go with another system for my 150gal?

F.Y.I. I have sand substrate, and will be stocking it with cichlids or piranhas for now but in a couple of months I'm only gonna have 2 retics in it.

personally I love Emp 400's .. Though I have experience with both Emps and AC 110's and the Ac 110 aka AC500. Are much quieter. you will notice the difference in noise immediately.

well when you get your P's or cichlids which ever i would suggest either two or three AC110's or emp 400's what ever you want, i prefer AC110's, but have both

and when you get your retics i would suggest adding either a small sump, wetdry or a canister filter perhaps an xp4 or xp3

I'd recommend you use a canister for bio, and a couple HOB's for mech filtration. I'd run with the AC110s as they are far superior in the mech filtration than the emps. For a canister I'd run an Eheim 2260, 2262, 2078, or 2080 for bio. Of course this would achieve far more filtration than necessary, but better to have backup, rather than run into one filter, and that filter dying, along with your fish.

Well I have a 120 which is somewhat pretty close to your tank size. My current setup is two Emperor 400 and Rena Filstart XP3. The water stays crystal clear with this setup. You may want to go with an XP4 since you have a bigger tank than mine. I am not sure if the AC110 is more quiet than the Emperor400 as I have had AC filters that got loud on me. As for flow rate the AC110 win hand down.

Thanks everyone for your input I will be looking into all of them, do some research and go from there. Again I appreciate all of your comments!

stick an fx5 on it or a couple of ehime 2222's there pritty goood...wat fish u gna keep?

Cichlids or P's for now, and then I'm gonna go to a Stingray only tank. (2 retics) But im not gonna put the rays in there for a couple more months.
