i dont think anyone has ever seen a biowheel like that! there is only so much surface area for BB on a bio wheel, the rest is just nasty build up. most people will swish their wheels in tank water every now and then but hey if it works for you go for it! hey by the way, does it stink? it looks stinky!

   But if it works for him and the fish are healthy  go for it :headbang2 . I have problems with it, but that's a whole nuther thread :D

What are your problems with it? My fish are healthy and are thriving in my tank.

That's what I said.

Sorry that I don't have a more recent pic or one that doesn't have a glare on it. I recently re-did my tank with new plants and no background.

Thanks. So now do yuo still think it is a bad thing to have my BIO-Wheel like that? My LFS says that I have the best water they have ever tested from a goldfish tank. Ammonia is zero, Nitrites (I hope I don't have Nitites and Nitrates mixed up) is zero, and Nitrates are 5ppm. I do weekly to bi weekly water changes and only clean my filter if the BIO Wheel stops and replacing the cartridge doesn't restore BIO Wheel rotation.

You are correct, it's NitrItes. Ammonia and NitrItes should always be at 0 PPM. NitrAtes are the last in the chain. Yours are AWESOME if they stay at 5 PPM, especially with goldfish!

They don't stay that way, but I did a water change 3 days before my water got tested. I do weekly water changes. That goodness for BIO Wheels. I just wish that Tetra Whisper filters had BIO-Wheels. I like the design and quality of the Whisper better. I am going to try to rig one with a BIO-Wheel this weekend. I already have my idea pictured.

Interesting, post some pix if you get it to work.
I am a big Marineland fan. 3 days now since my upgrade to the Emps and the parameters are still looking good.

Great!! I just got done cleaning my tank and when I restarted my Penguin, it made a loud grinding noise. The impeller has seperated from the magnet. Figures. The warranty just went out, too. I rigged it to pump water just so that I can run it enough to get my Whisper going. I guess if it quits, I will just trash it. I can't wait until Saturday!! I get a new filter box and lid for my Whisper 1!!!
