Filtration

both

You could do one of each, yes. I think it's always good to have two types of filtration in case one goes bad, you have a back up running. If you do want to do just one, I'd suggest a canister....maybe something like a Rena XP3. I have one of those on my 65 gallon tank and it's great.

never had a problem with either. i love my canisters in my room tho, so quiet!!

HOBs move more water for less money... but have more potential for bypass (unfiltered water going back to the tank)... they are also louder (splashing water) but keep the surface agitated heling to keep the water oxygenated...

Canisters cost a good bit more and don't move nearly as much water... but they filter the water more thoroughly (less bypass potential)... they can be set up to function almost (if not) silent... If using only canisters set up the return to break the surface to help oxygenate the water...

But in the end... either will work for you...

I get used to the HOB noise. If your the type of person that prefers a fan running while your sleeping for white noise then go HOB. But both is always kewl

fluval 404s are $85 on ebay, which is a really good deal. Canisters seem to be quieter, which is nice, plus they are more out of sight.
