all you have to do is drill a 1/4" hole in the return right about the water line and it will break the siphon. no need for any re-plumbing or anything. easy fix. sumps are the way to go.
they can fail with build-up of stuff.... drilling a hole is the safest bet. you can check it at water changes for any gunk, although i've never seen any on mine ever...
