filtration

A lot of people here like aquaclears. On my 55 I have the emperor 400 and a penguin 200. I have to say the emperor is a great filter. I've never really had a problem with it at all and it flows a good amount for the price. Much better filter than the penguin 350. I only own one, and it is a 15 year old version of the ac50, the ac610. I don't have any gripes with it, it flows 200 gph and keeps my tank well circulated. But, if you were just to have one filter on the tank I would get the ac110 for the higher flow rate. Personally I would get 2 smaller filters, maybe 2 ac70s or a emperor 400 and another filter in the 150-200 gph area. Just try to get your total GPH over 500 and you should be fine.

Having used both AC 110s and Emp 400s... I prefer the AC line of filters...

Each has pros and cons, but the ease of rinsing and reusing the sponge over replacing or rebuilding cartridges is huge to me...

The last few times I had a 55 gal set up I used two AC110s to filter it and was consistently satisified with this... I do believe a tank can be kept healthy with just one, but the second one added enough current to keep mechanical filtration up to par. I do not think I would be happy with just one AC 70.

ok so the last thread was closed because people are angry.......
but i've decided against the undergravel filter and am looking at regular filters, should i go with the aquaclear 70-110 or should i go with the emperor 400. please give me your insight on them if you have any and keep it clean please. i'm trying to get as much knowledge as i can and bickering is helping no one, please and thank you.

this is another heated subject. lol. your best bet is to use the search function. this has been discussed many times.

in the end. the AC110 costs a little bit more initially (maybe $20) but is an all around better filter. and considering there are no filter cartridges to replace, you save something like $8/mo on filter cartridges, so it ends up paying for itself and more.

I know that it's really cool when people use the search function. But honestly, a person should be able to ask which filter people prefer without it turning into a huge deal. I think some folks around here need to gain perspective on what's important.

OP I still think that if you go with the AC 110 you're not going to regret it!

It's a 55.

Absolutely recommend the ac110 more flow great versatility and durability ! I have limited experience currently only one emperor 400. Good media volume to boot. With no cartridges to replace.
