What filtration would you recommend 48in x 24in by 20in tank. South American tank. A sump basket or a canister filter or filters.

This is a bit like saying: "Im in the market for a vehicle, can you recommend one?"

First things first: What is your budget?
2nd things 2nd: What is your stock?

Then when all is said and done everyone will make a different suggestion and you will be left to pick on your own anyway : )
I always go Eheim, but this depends on your answer to the first question I put to you. You would be looking for at least a 2217 depending on your stock.
Happy hunting!

I could go with a 2217 and a smaller canister or a couple of HOB's. So far as stock goes. Red Shoulder Severums, Red Head Geos and a few others?

Sounds like you haven't stocked this tank yet, am I right? If starting from scratch I would start with a 2217 (or similar) and a pair of HOB. I had pretty good luck with the Aqua Clear HOB's, particularly the one that was then known as an AC500. They did change the name since though. I have heard good things about the Emperor 400 though, and plan of picking one up sometime soon. If you are stuck between these two models (although there are tons of other good filters out there) you should first decide on weather you need more biological filtration (Emp. 400) or mechanical (AC500).
At least this my take on it.
