Fin rot help! Asap!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i took out alot of the filter'd water like 80% just so i could keep some warmth, and took the water i had sitting out and added that, so now he should have a good sustainable water.

This is about a gallon isolation tank, made sure their wasn't anything he could get stuck on or under :(

he's a pretty little fish.
sure looks weak though :-(
I'm not seeing fin rot in the pics..? do you see something that doesn't appear in photos, or are you assuming that missing fins rotted off?
maybe the other fish tore off fin.
comet goldfish are faster & tougher than fantails. it also could have introduced a pathogen/sickness which had started weakening the fantail before being attacked.. fish will pick on weaker ones.
I'm not sure what to tell you, as he appears to be dying but I could be wrong.
clean water is good, but it'd be nice if it was well oxygenated as well (but not a strong current which uses his remaining strength) oxygen needed, especially since he isn't swimming to move water through his gills more.
If you're lucky, he may be in temporary shock from the beating & recover strength in the safe bowl.. give dim lighting.
I'm sure others will help too.

If you really see abnormal swelling in his gut area, adding dissolved epsom salts may help. it helps reduce swelling and help move the digestive tract. is ok to use along with regular salt. they do 2 different things.

Yeah this phones camera is terrible, his fins are all frayed pretty much :( adding the salt an isolating him seemed to give him hope, I awoke to him attempting to kicking around the tank :) so atleast he isn't giving up. Any addatives I can do other then salt?

You need to get a 5 gal bucket or similar deep container about a foot or more to increas water pressure. Fill with tap water add declore (if you don't have any get Seachem Prime). Temp should be around the same as the water it's currently in. No heater let the water settle to ambiant. Add an air stone to the container. This should help but I can't promise anything I don't know how far gone the fish is but this will give it a shot. Don't add salt or anything else to the container.

Going foward. You have to get some type of filtration set up on your main tank. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and foul there water quickly. An established filter will convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrite to the less toxic (to a degree) nitrate. Nitrate levels are reduced by water changes. A small bio-wheel HOB filter will do a good job for you. If you can get some established filter media from the LFS it will get your bio filter jump started. Pick up a test kit while your at the store so you can monitor your tanks progress. Do small 5% daily water changes for the first few weeks and then you can go to twice a week 25% water changes. Nitrates should be below 20ppm lower is better but this is a sutable level to shoot for. I hope this is helpful but please ask all the questions you have.

He was okay this morning actually swimming almost normal and I got back from picking up a new bow sight and i got back and he had passed. :/ I guess he just couldn't make it.
