Today is the fourth day of my severum's fin rot treatment with triple sulfa and half doses of malachite green. He's made a lot of progress as it isn't on his body anymore and most of the white on his fins have cleared up. How do I know when to stop treating for this?

antibiotics should have written directions as to the minimum number of days to treat fish. if you don't treat them for a full course, it increases chance of bacteria becoming antibiotic resistant.
lacking instructions with your product, try googling the exact drug for fish instructions.
in any case, you're sure not done yet.

here is the small Bottom Line from site:
Sulfas can also be safely used with other mild broad spectrum parasite/fungal treatments to boost anti bacterial effectiveness,; a good example would be the Medicated Wonder Shell.
As well Triple Sulfa has minimal impact on nitrifying bio filters when used correctly

DOSAGE: 250 mg per 10 gallons every 48 hours (24 hours for severe issues) with a 25% water change before each treatment. Treat for a minimum of 10 days.

Triple Sulfa is found in: Aquarium Pharmaceuticals; Triple Sulfa

Contraindications

*Best not used concurrently with other antibiotics/antimicrobials (although use with chemical dyes such as malachite green is safe)
*Do not use with copper based medications

No I have the instructions and followed them. I didn't mean fourth day as it is actually the fifth day but the fourth dose which is the full course of the treatment. It says I can treat with another course after 24 hours of the full treatment with a 25% water change if another course is necessary. The 10 day minimum wasn't on the box and I've followed the boxes instructions to a t but it doesn't say what to look for to know when treatment is done. So after a ten day treatment how do I know if I'm done?

fungus should not be visible and the fin rotting will have stopped.

Correct.

If the fish still shows signs of it there in any amount then do another 5 day treatment. I would keep treating until its completely gone from the fish to be honest. I'm glad the tripple sulfa and malachite green Tom and I sugested is working well.

Alrighty then. I have just enough money for 3 more boxes of triple sulfa but not enough to get more malachite green. Does it matter if I stop the malachite green or is that crucial now that I've been using it? I have 10.8 mg of it left.

If you don't have it you don't have it, it does get expensive. Continue with the sulfa without it. Have you salted the water?

Agreed. Just worry about dosing the triple sulfa. And yes. Aquarium salt.
