Final African Cichlid Tank Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes i like the yellow labs but their so pricie.... i might start off with some assorted cichlids because they are so cheap, ill have to pick wisley though. i saw a albino peacock cichlid that was in a poor walmart tank with some other assorted africans that really cought my eye. but i heard that peacocks are really aggressive with their tankmates and im scared to get him and put him in there by himself. and then when i add others, he chase them to death.. what do you guys think?

You have a nice set up, you have spent time and money to make it that way. My advice is to not settle to buying your cichlids at petsmart. Use the internet and your phone to find out what stores in other areas carry and possibly to find a local breeder. A little road trip to get a great group of fish is worth it.

To answer your last question - I would wait. I think it would be best to start with a group of fish, like mbuna. Mbuna spawn like crazy, someone in your area has to have some fry available. I think doing an all male peacock tank is not a good way for you to start. A group of peacock fry would be fun - to become a breeding group.

please please be careful with those bricks stacked that high......I kept a nice 55 gallon african tank a few years back and these little 1 1/2 inch fish would move so much stone that it would constantly cause my natural rock caves to move, shift, and one time fall.....lucky for me it didnt crack the tank....bricks like yours dont have a lot of natural "tongues and grooves" so they CAN be toppled more easily......if you are gonna keep the bricks lower how high they go!!!

i understand your concern CrazyCichlids but the bricks are in place and are pretty hard to move but i will have to take the two top bircks down because their not very stable up there. maybe ill look on the enternet for some people in my area looking to get rid of some fry. that would save money and would be fun to raise the fry. but it might be hard for me still in high school and all but ill just have to see

make sure the bricks are on some eggcrate or on the glass flat with out sand for the base rocks ... then they are less like to fall if at all... I had a stack to the top of a 2ft tall tank without problems for a long while.
