Final catfish for my 75 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say that the danios may be in danger from the elongatus to... Also, Your severum and geophagus will try to get the danios and terrorize them when they get bigger... If you do not really care about the danios then they would make great "dither" fish... And if the giant danios get 6 inches they may be safe... Not exactly sure how large they get...

I got them as dither in the first place, I am sticking with the stock I have planned but need a last catfish.
So not any kind of Lima, no (actual) Synodonti.
So either an AUSD, four line pim, horsehead catfish, or if anybody else has any good ideas.

Do you want a type of catfish that gets big and eats a lot or the smaller community type? What are your specifications?

Alright here are a few specifications:
average max size: 7-12"
experience: hardy- moderate/difficult
temperature: ok with 76 F
ph: ok with 7.6
activity: active preferred but not necessary
compatibility: peaceful ok, semi aggressive ok, aggressive...ok as long as it will not eat the danios.
diet: omnivores, carnivores, some herbivores
traits: personable and friendly towards owner, can be taught to handfeed.
other: something b@d@$$ looking if possible and no not a community cat but still good with all the other fish.

it can be uncommon but not rare or very difficult to obtain.

There was one catfish at my LFS that I really liked but I forget the name. All I know is there were a bunch of them, they had small stout barbels, they were schooling, they looked very similar if not some type of shark catfish, the tag said 6" max, they had very long pectoral fins in proportion to there body, blue eyes, and active.

This may not be what I am getting but I would like to know what it is just invade I decide to get one by a slim chance.

Some catfish that make the cut would be:

AUSD
four line pim
hprsehead pim
Sun catfish
any others you guys may suggest

Hey Sean :) Ok. This scenario, where you suppose you will have your fish in a 75 for their life, does not appear plausible to me. The cats you are considering will ALL eat their smaller tankmates after they reach the adult size or even sub-adult size, except for the syno. So, get the syno.

However, these cats can live for at least 15-20 years and even much longer. I am dubious you will remain stationary in your hobby for 15+ years. Chances are you will have more tanks, even big 1000+ gal ponds (as I see you love huge fishes), then life happens, you might have to downsize or even quit, then you may come back. Can't predict life. Must have a sort of plan though :)

All choices you list may work for a while, even the lima/elongatus. For longer or shorter time. If you indeed will "freeze" the tank for 15+ years, I'd vote for the syno and be done :)
