I think some people like growout tanks because it's easier to catch the fish, you use less water for water changes until the fish gets larger, and it's easier to feed the little guys. Probably also because some people allready HAVE those sized tanks maybe? I have heard that a 90 is a better permanent home for oscars, but some people say yes, others no. Just some food for thought on your ultimate size there, heh heh.

1 oscar 75g seems fine my opinion! and with 1 other smaller cichlid convict firemouth they said on oscar forum would be fine or silver dollars they are one of the best tank mates and they dont creat lots of bioload but need very good quality water so maybe il pass on silver dollars after all ive only kept 20g brackish spotted puffer tank + 1 5g community tank and 10g community tank. so i dont want to head into hard to keep fishes yet as 1 water change week 20-30% is enough for me but want more life in tank and they said a firemouth or convict would be the best for ME!

yes i do have a 20g spare tank with 1 spare filter that could work with a 20g could i house smal oscar with small firemouth 20 g? and for how long if so

under good conditions, they will outgrow the 20 in just a few months, 3-4 probably. I use growouts for the convenience. It is easier to clean, feed and maintain overall health. It is also much easier to deal with those random disasters that may happen like broken filters, cracked panels or disease outbreaks. Also, a big reason why I use them, is I need to get the fish big enough to survive with the big boys in the big tank.

Some of the previous is just rude or uncalled for. relax and take criticism. If you are going to click post, be ready for the reply

As you asked in your OP, why not just keep it in the 75g from juvenile to adult? Growouts are normally used by people who 1) already have both the growout and the final tank set up and cycled, and 2) need their fish to reach a certain size before adding them to the main tank due to a risk of aggression/predation. The only exception is when a new tank will not be necessary for a long time, so there is plenty of time to upgrade (e.g. when growing out dats, flagtails, and other slow-growing fishes). None of these apply to your situation, so using a growout would be pointless.

And regarding cideon's response, I don't see how feeding could be an issue in any tank size (you put the food near the fish, and the fish eats it; what does this have to do with the size of the tank it is in?), and by the same amount by which the water change volume would decrease as a result of having a smaller tank, the frequency at which water changes were needed would increase, so theoretically, the difference in water being used in either situation (20g tank vs. 75g tank) should be negligible.

I agree

yes i guesse but fire mouth dont add much to bioload nr convict and are easy o maintain with a few minor chases and nibbles with rare contact the fire mouth and convict are able to brush of bite sn chases as said on oscar forum. so il get a convict or a firemouth to go with oscar and after im done university im getting no doubt large ass tank so i could house a bad ass predator like the pangasasuis or wat eve idk how to spell it or predator cichlid tank! and maybe the oscar = fire mouth or convict will be alive long enough till i get tank so i can put them in there!
