Finally changing substrate in tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use pool filter sand, but only from one pool place. I checked multiple, some only have brown sand, while others have crushed quartz pure white. I like the pure white, looks much better especially under moonlighting. the difference in color is night and day, but hte same price no matter where you go. I paid $9.99 per 50lb bag. 2 bags in my 75g allowed for some scaping to make it look neat, but I probably could have gotten away with 50lb for that. It's definitely worth it for the appearance, mine looks great.

Oh, no matter what you get, get a big ass rubbermaid container, put all the sand in it, put t he house in, and fill it, and keep the hose running so it overflows. While it's doing that, run your hand through it and mix it all around, vigorously, until it's completely clear. If it takes more than 30 seconds to seddle, you're not going to like how it looks in your tank. It will get there, it took me about 45min of doing it to get my 100lb clean. Every once in a while tip it and dump a majority of the water out just after you vigorously mix it and most of the crap is still floating. That will give you the best looking and. Now I can trail my fingers across the bottom of my tank and brush stuff up, and it all settles in seconds.

I agree with anything > play sand, I just dumped ALL my play sand out and I am going to look for some 20 - 16 mesh sand. Anyone know the mesh on PFS?

I would wash it also whatever you get. You can do the same thing in a 5g bucket!
