Finally decided what to do with my 55 gal. and its done.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He'll be more happy now.

Are you planning on stocking any more fish for the tank as of now?

How are the plants growing?

I still plan on adding several more Pike Killifish if i can ever find any around here. I would like to put a couple more fish in the tank as well but no idea what. I want to keep the tank fairly peaceful and keep the pike killis at the top of the food chain so to speak since the tank is going to pretty much center around them in the long run.
As for the plants they dont seem to be thriving quite like they do in my 20 gallon which could be a product of having a shop light for lighting rather than an aquarium light. I also just switched my diy co2 over from my 20 gal to this tank so maybe that'll help though i dont think i really need it for the few plants in the tank, it wont hurt anything so im givin it a shot.
Here's another pic i took last night.

The tank is looking great! I think you could definitely go with some more pike killies and maybe some mid-swimming fish?

I definately will be getting more pike killis, thats if i can ever find any again.
Im open to suggestions for some mid level fish, but they gotta be too big for the pike killi to eat (somehow she managed to eat 2 male guppies a while back), yet not bully or hurt her in any way...Ideas?

How big do pike killies grow? Not to familiar with the species. From what I have researched it says 8" for females and 4" for males? Also not really sure about their behavior, but I assume that they don't harass larger fish?

Gouramis, Angelfish, Aurulius barbs (though they appreciate water movement), Clown Barbs, or most other barbs that aren't too bitey and/or small.

@Jen. I saw some african butterflys at the store the other day and i REALLY liked the way they look (hadnt ever payed attention to them in the past), I havent done any research on them yet, but from the looks of their mouth they could be quite the surface level predator, which im fine with as long as they wont hurt my pike killi. So ill probably do some research on them unless you have experience with them and would like to share to save me the time lol.

@Marcus. I will try to get a couple pics of the fish themselves for you guys, although its proving difficult since the pictus never stop moving, the eclipse and the spotted raph only come out to feed usually at night, and the pike killi is still pretty shy so if i get too close to the glass to get a pic she goes behind something. Although she is starting to venture down a lil farther from the surface and explore the plants.

@Pie. The pike killis size varies greatly depending on where they or their parents were caught origionally. I know of One river that some come from that i've read the females can grow up to 9" in some cases (which would be ****ing awesome), but on average i've read anywhere from 5-8" for females (again depends on where they come from) with the males being smaller, My female now i would guestimate to be around 4 to 4.5 inches.
As for their behaviour.. In my experience so far they are evolved for one thing. Ambush hunting. They really dont have much "personality" But they are hunters, and VERY efficient ones at that (which is why i like em). Mine so far pretty much just wait around very patiently waiting for her next prey to come by. But lately she has been going on the prowl a lil more often. They dont seem to have any interest in anything they dont think they can eat and are actually pretty shy.
Im not a big fan of barbs in general since the few that i've had before all seem to have the napoleon complex that they need to show everyone whos boss by nipping and i really dont want that to happen in this tank.
Thought about angels but I really cant remember much about how aggressive they are since i havent kept any since i was a kid.

Angels aren't that aggressive as long as they aren't a pair, though mine did get angry at the tetras for nipping its fins...gourmais are another option and my snakeskin gourami doesn't bother anybody. The problem is my snakeskin freaks out a lot and crashes into the sides of the tank.

I've read that pike killies do enjoy floating plants, they hang around them to ambush prey, so I guess you could get some of the hardier species like watersprite?

Thats very true they do like floating plants. i would like to get some greater variety of plants including water sprite, but the shops around here dont seem to carry much variety of plants.
I've done some looking into the african butterfly fish and i really like them and would like to have one in this tank, but i want to hear from some people that have kept them first to make sure they're not gonna mess with the pike killis.
I also might pick up a couple angels and see what happens. They're a common enough fish that i could find them a good home on CL prettty fast if they dont work out in the tank.

I have African burrtflies and to be honest they are quite boring to me. Sure its cool to see a huge cricket get eaten but other than that you dont see them they like to hide. They are cool looking though.
